“Iceland’s most punctual airline,” Wow Air is currently running a flash sale featuring tickets to Iceland for just $99, including all taxes and fees.
You’d need to leave from either Boston or BWI (Baltimore). Although BWI is technically classified as a Washington DC airport, I’ve always thought that was being generous as it’s quite a ways out there. In addition to Iceland however there are deals to London and perhaps even to Copenhagen, Denmark.
Wow Air ran a similar promotion about a month ago and it looks like they’re bringing it back. The good part about this promotion is that (currently at least) you’re not tied to a specific day or week or month. I found availability in May, August, and October. So the deals are there you just need to look.
Visit Iceland for Cheap… But Remember…
Anytime low-cost carriers have substantial discounts and promotions you need to make sure you don’t get caught up just the initial cost. The way they make a ton of their money is the add-ons.
1. This $99 deal is going TO Iceland
And you’ll need to get back. However depending on availability you can get an inexpensive flight back.
Play around with the dates. The option above is less than $300 including all taxes and fees, which is an absolutely fantastic deal.
2. You Need to Leave from Boston or Washington DC
If you’re based on the east coast this isn’t a huge expense but if you’re coming from the west coast or mid-west you’ll have to fly into one of the two cities. Make sure you build that into your cost.
3. Watch Out for the “Extra” Expenses
Low cost carriers get a bad reputation sometimes having to nickel and dime passengers for everything however I’ve never had an issue with it. If I don’t want a soda or to check a bag, I’m happy to save money. With this deal however, you really need to be mindful of your baggage allowance.
Wow Air allows you a carry on bag of up to 5 kilograms, which comes out to roughly 10 pounds. You can bring a heavier carry on, but you’ll have to pay for it, and even then it’s only up to about 25 pounds. If your bag is heavier than 25 pounds, you’ll have to check it, at $48 each way.
You CAN pack light. You can do it. I promise. You don’t need as much stuff as you think you do. But you need to plan for it. Keep your bag to under 10 pounds and you won’t have to pay anything extra.
Considering packing light, and consider being creative. Last year I picked up a travel vest from ScotteVest and it’s the perfect accessory for this exact type of situation. Airlines will weigh your bag but they won’t weigh you. I’ll be able to bring all of my clothes for an extended period of time either as I wear them, in a small day pack, or in one of the many pockets of the vest.
