How to Live Abroad for Less than $1,000 a Month

Previously I encouraged you to try to live on $1,000 a month or less and save or invest the rest. While living and working and dreaming about travel, it’s imperative that we all realize the fallacies of travel that seem to be pushed on us from an early age. We all think travel has to be expensive, and that it will cost us more than we can afford to save. “I’ll go in a few years, when I’ve saved up enough money,” becomes the talking point we revert back to. But for so many, months becomes years and years become decades, and soon a mix of family and kids and bills often (falsely) makes us think that our time to travel has passed.

“Wandering Earl” is a great travel blog written by Derek, but better known as, “Earl.” Earl has spent a travel career of sorts by visiting places all over the world. He’s been “on the road” for years and has collected lots of great information on living abroad, making money, and planning out trips. Reading his blog has been quite inspiring to me.

Some time ago, Earl wrote a fantastic blog post about how to live on less than $1,000 a month in a number of different counties. For everyone who thinks they can’t travel, or that they need to save up for half a decade before they leave the states for anything longer than a week, Earl offers some great advice.

Since the largest expense is housing, the key is to find a place to live that you can stay at longer term as opposed to a hotel or resort. If you’re able to stay in a place for a month or longer, you’ll be surprised at how renting an apartment in another country is usually the same price or significantly cheaper than renting an apartment in the U.S.

Check out Earl’s post here, on how to live abroad for much less than what most people believe they’ll need to spend.
